A travel journal keeps the parts of a trip that an itinerary and camera roll can miss: a conversation, a wrong turn, the name of a meal or how a place felt after the crowds left. One short entry can hold a day without becoming a report of everything you did.
You can write on paper or use memoir as a travel journal app with photos and voice notes. Choose a format you will reach for during the trip.
A simple routine for a trip
- Before leaving: write one thing you are curious about and anything you already know you want to remember. If useful, create a journal with the trip’s name.
- At a pause: save one photo or a few words. Include a place name while you still have it in front of you.
- At the end of a day: add the story around one moment. You can skip the rest.
- After returning: choose an entry you want to expand and write what you would tell a friend about it.

Travel journal entry examples
These fictional entries show different amounts of time and detail.
One sentence on a busy day
Missed the ferry, found a bakery near the harbour, and spent an hour sharing a pastry neither of us knew how to pronounce.
A photo with context
This is the view after we stopped trying to reach the summit. It was windy, Jo’s flask was leaking, and we sat behind that rock until the rain passed. The photo looks much calmer than it felt.
A note after coming home
I keep thinking about the little square where we had breakfast. Nothing special happened there. I liked knowing where we would sit and having nowhere to hurry.
What if I fall behind?
Begin with the moment you can still describe. A trip journal does not need a page for each day. If you have several photos, choose one and answer “why did I take this?” Add an earlier date when appropriate, and distinguish remembered details from things you looked up afterwards.
Keep a digital travel journal in memoir
Add photos and a sentence in the composer. Use a voice note at a quiet stop when speaking is easier, then check any available transcript later. You can add location context to an entry and search your writing for a place or remembered detail.
Memoir keeps personal entries; it does not automatically create route maps, travel itineraries or shared trip websites. Read the backup guide when planning how to keep an independent copy of your memories.
