An open creative journal with drawings, paper scraps, pencils and brushes.

You can start journaling with a date and one thing you noticed today. You do not need a special notebook, a polished story or a promise to write every day. The useful starting point is an entry small enough that you can finish it.

How to start journaling in three steps

  1. Choose somewhere you can return to

Use a notebook, a private document or a journal app. Make one test entry before spending time on layouts. For digital writing, check how saving, locking and exporting work.

  2. Record one specific moment

Write what happened, what you noticed and what you want to remember. Two or three sentences are enough. A photo with a caption or a short spoken note is also a starting point.

  3. Choose an easy next occasion

Try another entry after breakfast or when you get home. If you miss it, continue on the next available day. You do not need to reconstruct every missing date.

A completed first entry

Tuesday. I ate lunch outside instead of at my desk. The air was cool and I noticed how tense my shoulders had been. Tomorrow I would like to take that same ten-minute break.

This is a fictional example, not a model you must match. It records a scene, a reaction and a possible next step. Your entry can stop after the scene.

What if nothing comes to mind?

Describe the last thing you ate, something somebody said, or the place where you are sitting. Concrete details are often easier than answering a large question such as what your life means. If a prompt feels intrusive, choose another one.

Make the practice fit your day

Keep the first week deliberately simple. Try a sentence on a busy day and a longer entry when you want one. After a few attempts, notice which format you actually used. A beautiful system that you avoid is less useful than a plain page you return to.

Try the first-entry paper to type, sketch or add an image. Download your result before leaving: that exercise keeps your work only in the current page. Prefer paper? Use the daily journal template.
